Original Ideas

Super excited because I've got the day off school tomorrow, and will have heaps of extra time to write some posts, find some awesome new blogs to read and I might even make a video for Thursday? If you have a blog, I'd love to check it out, leave your URL below! Oh, and of course, catch up on some homework. Also, if you have any video/post ideas, I'd love to see them below.

ANYWAY, to get onto the actual reason I am here today, I'm taking a course at school at them moment, called introduction to philosophy or something similar. I'm finding it kind of hard because it is asking, unlike most of my other subjects, for what you think. And just what you think, not what you think because of what someone else thought!

Does anyone else think that it is slightly alarming that we aren't being taught how to think for ourselves, but are just being taught to draw conclusions from what other people have said? Because I think this is a serious problem. If we are only being taught to make our 'thoughts' from what other people have said how will we deal with problems in the future, that haven't been faced before?

If we are only being taught,

or even told that we have to, model our ideas off others and any idea we have has to backed up with evidence FROM SOMEONE ELSE, we are never going to have original ideas. Yeah, it may not be a requirement in the workforce, but it that is how you have been told to do it at school for years, that is how you are going to do it. Original ideas are become rarer and rarer, because we are not 'allowed' to have them at school.

Having an original idea is becoming harder, because so many people have lived before, but it is not impossible. Original, by definition, means not dependant on other people's ideas. So even if your 'original' idea is similar to someone else's it is still original, provided that it hasn't been influenced by someone else.

But isn't everything influenced by something? Me, sitting here, writing this blog post, isn't because I suddenly had the idea that there was this issue. It was because of the conversations I've had, the things I think, and the people around me. Does this mean my writing isn't my 'original idea'? Or is the difference if you seek out the influence, if you are looking for something to tell you how to think and then have an idea because of that, it is not an 'original idea'? If we are constantly surrounded by other peoples ideas and thoughts, how will we ever have an original idea, something that is purely our own.

But then again, if you have a thought, and it isn't because of something you just read because you wanted to have that thought, is it an original idea? Yes it has been influenced by people, and the things you have experienced, but that is all part of who you are. Writing this now, I think it is what I believe.

So, I think we have established that you can have an original idea. Let's go with, if it's an idea you've had and weren't looking for, or reading something that told you what to think (cause hey, that would give everyone who worked for media a whole lot of power), it's an original idea! But are we ever going to use our ability to have an original idea if we aren't taught how? I don't think so.

If we are being told that we have to get the right answer, and that we have to base our work off what other people have said, we are just copying them, in a way. In a subtle way we are being taught that originality is bad (hey, let's save more on that for another post), and that we need to have evidence from someone else or what we are saying is useless.

I'm not saying we shouldn't listen to anything other people have said, but I am saying that I think it is important to have an equalish balance between 'original ideas' and researching what other people think.

I'd really like to hear what you think about this post, and what it's talking about? Do you think having original ideas is no longer important? Or do you think that we need to learn to think for ourselves?

In book suggestions books books i've read ideas inspiration poppy poppy's books poppy's post post reading recently suggestions

I've been reading....

Hey there,
Finally, we only have one week of school left for this term! I can't wait for the holidays, especially because I am going to Queensland with one of my friends for a week! As I mentioned in my last post I have started a bullet journal experiment. I am really enjoying it at the moment and tomorrow I will share some of the things I've been doing with it, please let me know in the comments below if you have any bullet journal inspiration for me, or ideas that you have tried.

Today I wanted to share some of the books I've been reading recently, most of these I've been re-reading, so sorry if I've mentioned them before.

More than this- by Patrick Ness. I read this book about a year and a half ago and I remember I really enjoyed it so it has become by at-school book. If you love mystery/ dystopian or similar styles of books I can almost guarantee you'll love this one. A review of it should be going up on our goodreads account in the next few weeks.

The summer I turned pretty, it's not summer without you and we'll always have summer- by Jenny Han. I just finished re-reading this series and while they are not my all-time favourites I enjoyed reading them. These books are for lovers of romance novels and/or realistic fiction. Again, a more thorougher review will be going up on our goodreads account.

This is what happy looks like- by Jennifer E Smith. I just finished reading this book for the first time and I loved it. It is again not my faovurite ever book, but it was enjoyable and entertaining. Another one for lovers of romantic and/or realistic fiction. Let me know in the comments if you would like to see this book reviewed on the blog in the next few weeks.

Hope you will enjoy reading one of these books and don't forget to let me know if you have any suggestions for me.
See you tomorrow.

In challange get involved have a go ideas ideas for you photo poppy poppy's photos poppy's post post September september challange september photo collage challange share try

September Photo Challenge

Hey everyone.
Last month I write up an August Photo-a-Day challenge and challenged all of you to take a photo every single day for the 31 days of August. I don't know how many of you did it but I do know that I tried (and failed) to keep up with everything and taking a photo every single day. I really liked the idea of a photo challenge but I couldn't work it into my already bursting schedule. But that gave me the idea of something a bit more relaxed and easier to fit into your lifestyle.  (Drum roll please.....)

The September Photo Collage Challenge
The September Photo Collage Challenge is simple (I guess) and it allows you to fit the challenge in and adapt it to suit your lifestyle.
The challenge is to, between now and the last day of September, fill a 3x3, or 4x4 or 5x5 or even 6x6 or 9x9 (if you are feeling ambitious) grid of photos. You choose the sized grid that you think will be most achievable for you (if you think you can take 81 different photos in the next 26 days go ahead, and make sure you let me know how you go).

Here is how it works:
1.Choose the grid that best fits what you will be able to do (I think I will be doing 5x5 or 4x4, that is only 20-25 photos).
2.Simply take the number of photos in the grid you chose that summarise your September.
3.Try and make the gird as accurate as possible, that is the challenge try and not just take photos of your exciting holiday but capture the not-so-interesting parts of you life as well, if the majority of your September was spent at home doing not-so-much your grid should reflect that.
4.Create the grid, using a collage app or website.

The exciting bit:
I figured that to make this challenge that little bit more exciting I would make it a competition.
If you participate in the challenge and at the end of September decided that your grid is amazing and you want to share it with the world (or the small part who have discovered this blog) you can email it to us (as a photo please) with a short summary about your experience and/or September for the chance to get it displayed on our blog, and the chance to create the October photo challenge with us (if that is what you would like).

So get your cameras ready and start snapping at September! We'd love to know if you are participating, let us know in the comments below. Over the next four weeks we will be sharing some tips and ideas for your September Photo Grid.

In 5 5 ways advice books ideas ideas for you poppy poppy's post post reading you

5 ways to find a new book

Hey,
It's Poppy once again.
Finding a new book is always a struggle for me. There is so much to choose from and I never know where to start or what I even want to read. Today I've put together a list of 5 ways you can find your next favourite book.

1.Look at books similar to the one you've just finished, or recommended books for next. -on the Kindle it automatically recommends similar books when you finish one that you have just read, I find that there is usually a good book or two in this list. If you don't have a kindle you can look up similar books on the internet.

2.Look at more books by that author- assuming you liked that book this is a great way to find another different yet similar book. Simply searching an authors name will bring up books that they have written. And if the author hasn't written any other books keep checking to see if they publish a new one.

3.Ask your friends- ask your friends or some people who have similar interests to you what they have been reading and if they are liking it. This is a great way to find a new book.

4.Ask an adult- ask your parents what they read when they were your age, or go to the book store and ask one of the staff members for a recommendation.

5.Read blogs/goodreads- blogs (like this one) often have lists of books to read, or book reviews and goodreads has heaps and heaps of different book suggestions and reviews.

Hopefully this list will give you an idea of where to start next time you finish a book. You can see all the posts we have written about books here. Let me know how you find a new book in the comments below.

In 3 art art forms artwork creativebug drawing ideas ideas for you make painting photo poppy poppy's post post scrapbooking

What should I make next?

Hi there everyone,
It's Poppy again! Today I thought that I might share some different art forms that I enjoy. Everyone has heard of some of these put others aren't so popular and maybe one will be your next favourite artwork!

1.Watercolour painting- who doesn't love watercolour paints? They are so easy to work with and you can create so many different shades and effects without having to buy a lot of paint. You could try doing a shillouette, drip painting or just a normal painting!

2.Scrapbooking- scrapbooking is great fun and a great way to document your travels. You can start scrapbooking with just  book, some paper, pens and glue but once you start you will probably need to get some fancier paper, stickers and other scrapbooking supplies. I love scrapbooking with my instant (polaroid) photos.

3. Photo doodling- this is an art form that isn't really that popular- but I love it. In a drawing class on creative bug I did at the beginning of the year (line drawing) I was introduced to this fun way to reinvent and add interest to photos. Basically you just draw lines, and circles around the main parts of the photo. But you can see the class for more information.

Let me know in the comments if you had a go of any of this, especially the photo drawing! I would love to see photos, you can email them to me at PoppyandMop@oulook.com.
Have a great day

PS. I would love to hear any questions you have for me to answer in a Q&A post coming up, email them to me or leave them in the comments.

In art DIY elephant feedback how to ideas ideas for you inspiration painting poppy poppy post poppy's post post tutorial watercolour

How to create a watercolour silhouette

Hey there, It's Poppy!
Recently I have been doing some watercolour painting at school and we used masking fluid  to create silhouettes.

For those of you who do not know masking fluid is a liquid that is painted around or on areas of the painting that you do not want to get paint onto and when it dries it acts as a barrier against paint, it can then be peeled off to leave areas clean

I loved doing it so last weekend I went to the art shop to get some masking fluid, and I found that it was super-duper expensive (I think it was about $20 for a 75ml bottle). I decided against buying it and tried a technique that I have heard of but never really used before. Crayon.
It worked surprisingly well and I don't think that I will be buying masking fluid anytime soon.

How to create a watercolour silhouette without using masking fluid

You will need:
Watercolour paper (watercolour paper is much better to use for this because it is much more sturdy and can take the amount of water we are going to be adding)
Watercolour paints (the ones I used were not the best quality paints, as in a $15 set of 30, but still worked well)
Paint brushes (I used various sizes, but if you can only have one size a medium or small brush would be best)
Water
Paper Towel
A white crayon
Some printer paper
A led pencil
Optional-a computer to print from

How to: (for variations and different ideas see the notes below)

1. Find an image that could be used for a silhouette on the internet (you could alternatively draw one straight onto the printer paper). (I used a single elephant silhouette) and print it onto the printer paper.

2. Cut around the outside of the image on the printer paper.

3.Lay the cut-out image onto the watercolour paper in the position you want it to be for the final painting.

4. Trace around the outside of the image using a led pencil, make sure you only do it lightly!

5. Remove the image that you cut out earlier from the watercolour paper

6.Using the white crayon carefully trace just inside the pencil line, around the whole shape.

7.Fill in the rest of the shape with the crayon.

8.Choose the colours you would like to use (I used a turquoise and pink)

9.Cover the area outside your shape with water (this makes the pain easier to spread, remember that you may have to reapply it in certain areas, depending on how fast you work)

10.Paint the area outside your shape (I blended my colours together with water), be careful and try not to get to much paint on the crayon but if you do get some on the crayon simply dab it or push it outside the shape with the paper towel.

11.Wait for the paint to dry (you may want to rub the pencil out carefully)

12.You are finished.

Notes
-You may want to do more than one of the same image on your painting, to do this simply do step three and four for the first image and then go back and repeat steps three and four for the rest of the images.

-Alternatively, you could paint the inside of the shape and leave the outside white, to do this simply reverse step three (trace on the outside of the pencil line) and don't worry about filling in the background.

Hopefully, you had fun doing this. I would love to hear about your attempts or see some photos (if we get enough I could post them on here in a few weeks) of your artwork.

I'm about to go out and take some photos that I might share tomorrow :-)

1.Brownies
I have just put a batch of brownies in the oven and the receipe I use makes the best brownies I have ever tasted! (The link will be up as soon as the internet decideds to work, try googling thermomix fudgy brownies and it is the one that starts with 'I am quite fussy with my brownies)

In 5 books poppy post recommended to read winter ideas you

Winter Reads

Hey there everyone! It's Poppy.

First of all I am really sorry that I didn't post over the weekend and that this post is so late. Because it was a long weekend we went up to the mountains and I didn't have any internet acess. I will be sharing some of the photos I took on my dad's digital camera on the weekend?
Today I wanted to make a list of some of my favourite books that I have read lately, that will be perfect for the cold winter days ahead (or taking some time out of the sun, if you live in the northen hemisphere) I have read all these books this year and most of them are realistic, young-adult, fiction. Enjoy!!!!

1. An abundance of Katherines by John Green (a really interesting book but in my opinion, not as good as paper towns or the fault in our stars)

2.Amy & Matthew by Cammie McGovern (I really enjoyed this book, it focuses on the story of Amy, an increidbly intelligent 18/19 year old with cerably palsy and Matthew, a boy who has undiagonsed OCD)

3.Dandelion Clocks by Rebecca Westcott (This was a really sweet story about young teen Liv. The book shows her journey from 13 weeks before to 6 months after her mothers death.)

4.Second Chance Summer by Morgan Matson. (This was an amazing book that followed Taylor Edwards journey through her final summer with her father)

5.Amy and Rodger's Epic Detour by Morgan Matson (Another amazing book following the journey that Amy and Rodger take across America. The book is set out a bit like a scrapbook and that was one of the things that I enjoyed most about it)

Hopefully this list will give you some ideas for your next favourite book. Let me know in the comments if you have a favourite book you want to share.

In 4 reasons feedback photography photos poppy poppy's photos poppy's photos. post why i love

Why I love Photography

Hi all,
A few days ago shared with you some of the photos I took over the weekend if you haven't seen it yet check it out here. It seems to be a bit of a theme at the moment (this weekend I will post about a different topic ) I was thinking about what makes me love taking photos so much. Here are a few of the reasons I came up with.

1.It allows you to capture things.
One of the things I love about photography is being able to capture exactly how things were. It is kind of hard to put into words but it is almost like a different kind of memory. You can capture the expression on someone's face when you have just given them something and when you  look back on it, you remember the way you felt and all sorts of other details about that moment. Things you would have otherwise forgotten.

2.You can share your memories with other people
Photography is interesting in this way because it allows other people to kind of see how you see the world. You can share things from your point of view.

3.You can share your photos with friends and family.
This is similar to point 2 but instead of showing them the world from your point of view you could be showing them where you went on a trip or what happened somewhere when they were not there.

4.Photos last forever.
Photos last forever (or a really long time, depending on how careful you are with them). If you are careful and keep all your photos in a safe place (one that you will actually remember) you can look back on them when you are older and be reminded of things you had forgotten.

I could go on and on with reasons why I love photography but I think I will stop there for today. Let me know in the comments what you love about photography.
PS. Don't forget to enter the photography competition, you can enter here.
PPS. And don’t forget to tell us what you think of our blog in our survey, you could win the chance to have something of yours shared on the blog.

In art copic ideas live poppy post review suggestion

Review- Copic Markers

Hey there,
Thanks to the person who suggested I do a review post. Today I am going to do a sort-of-review and list some of the things I like about Copic markers. If you have any post suggestions please let us know in the comments.

Copic markers, for those of you who don't know, are an alcohol based marker. They come is many different styles and colours. This website has some more information: https://imaginationinternationalinc.com/copic/ .

Here are some things I like about Copic markers.
1. They come in so many different colours, there are more than 100 different colours to choose from.
2.They have replaceable ink, so you only need to buy the marker once.
3.You can blend colours and create shadows using the colourless blender.
4. The different tips make it easy to create different lines, textures and make the markers useful for so many different things.
5.They have a really strong colour and make shading a large area quick and easy.

There is only really one thing that didn't really like about Copic markers and that is that they go through the page unless you have very thick paper. I have adjusted to it now and use thick paper or have something under what I am drawing on so it really doesn't matter that much.

I definitely recommend purchasing some Copic markers, especially if you enjoy art. While they are expensive they last for a long time and the quality is really good.

What do you like about Copic markers? Do you use something else insted?

In 5 reasons advice gratitude hi ideas for you inspiration life poppy post why winter you

Winter Wonderland...

 Hey there all,
Hope you are having a fantastic week (I am now that my science test is done).
It appears that winter has decided to pay a visit to this part of Australia and now it is absolutely freezing (and I mean below zero temperatures). We've had both the fire and heater on and it's the kind of weather that makes you just want to stay cuddled up in bed, under the doona, drinking tea/hot chocolate, and not really focusing on anything.
But I've been thinking... everyone seems to love summer and spend all winter complaining about the cold and wishing it was summer. While I love being at the beach and not having to go to school during summer I also love winter and here are the reasons why:

1. SNOW. I love skiing and while it doesn't snow where I live it snows not too far away and I love travelling to the snow for a weekend and spending some time skiing.

2.MY BIRTHDAY. My birthday is coming up!!!!

3.Hot Chocolate and Tea. I love drinking tea and hot chocolate and winter is the perfect time for it.

4.It's not stinking hot. The good thing about winter is that it is so much easier to warm yourself up then cool down. This is probably my favourite thing about winter (apart from my birthday and skiing)

5.Cuddling up under the doona with a hot water bottle. No more needs to be said.

So hope you are feeling a bit better about heading into winter now (and anyone who isn't when it is your winter remember this). Let me know what your favourite things about winter are below.

PS. I've decided that I am going to post every Monday, Wednesday and on the weekends, Mop will probably not be posting every week.

In 5 ways advice ideas for you life list live poppy post school study you

Exams, Assignments, Tests- How do you stay on top of it all?

Hey there, just in case you didn't notice Mop and I have swapped posting days (so I now post on Wednesdays). Hopefully, Mop will start posting on Mondays from now on.

I am an organised person. I like things to be in order and I generally know when I have assessment coming up at school. But at this time of year, it seems a bit like all the teachers got together and decided to put all the semester exams within four days of each other. It is so hard to decide what you need to remember. Should I focus on these dates for history or the formulas for maths? So today I thought that I might share some of the ways I stay on top of this assessment.
w
1. Start revising early (don't worry months aren't always needed, just a few weeks will do)
2. Focus on what you don't understand. (have a look through your book and think about what you didn't understand, spend more time on that but make sure you spend a few minutes on the other things as well.)
3.Write all the important information on a piece of paper or notecard as if it was something you were allowed to bring into the test with you. Revise using this.
4. Teach it to someone else. A sibling or friend who would be willing to listen to you for awhile could be a valuable tool. Teach them the important information.
5. Hand-write it- This won't make you magically remember everything but hand-writing is proven to help you retain more information.

Sunsets

Hey there, it's Poppy.
The other day I was looking through some of the photos on my phone and I noticed that I have lots of photos of sunsets.
Everyone enjoys taking photos of different things and for me this is sunsets. I think that I enjoy taking photos of them because they are something so structured (because they happen every day) yet they are all so different and unique. With all the photos I have of sunsets, they are all different.
I thought that I might share some of my favourites:
This photo is from a few weeks ago

This is my favourite photo and is from late summer.

In 4 reasons art ideas ideas for you inspiration life list poppy post snail mail

Snail Mail

Hey there, it's Poppy.
For Christmas last year, I received this Snail Mail book, written by Michelle Mackintosh. It shared some super cute ideas for hand-written letters. This book has inspired me to start writing hand-written letters to some of my friends and family.
Here are some reasons why snail mail is better than email, text or social media.

1.You get to receive letters in the mail. It sounds kind of silly but who doesn't love getting something (that isn't bills or boring stuff like that) in the mail.
2. You take the time to think about what you are writing. No one sends a letter that says ok or hi. People actually take the time and effort to consider what they want to say and put time into their replies.
3. You can make them creative and colourful. I am a visual person and I love things to be colourful and detailed. You can't add hand draw pictures or creative borders to emails. The snail mail book has lots of examples of creative ways to write letters.
4.You can keep all your letters. I have a box in my bedroom that I put all of my letters into. You can keep letters and re-read them whenever you want. They are much more special and significant than text messages.

So while text messages, email and social media are all great snail mail is a fantastic way to connect with long-lost friends, or friends that may have moved away, and family members. Why don't you give it a go? Send a letter to someone (it could even be the lady down the street or your grandparents). Have a go at making a letter interesting and adding a creative design.

I have been thinking about some ways for you to get to know me better and I thought that a question and answer post would be the best way. So here are a few questions that I think will let you know a bit more about the way I blog. I would love to hear your answers as well! Leave a comment below with your thoughts.
1. Why did you start blogging?
I started blogging 6 years ago to share my favourite book reviews but recently I have chosen to create this blog, with Mop, to share advice, tips, tricks and stories from our lives. We looked at soooooo many other lifestyle blogs and we both really enjoy reading them- so why shouldn't we start our own.

2.What is your favourite thing about blogging?
I absolutely love reading the comments that are left on our posts. It makes me really happy to see that our efforts are being appreciated by someone and we are achieving our goals. Your feedback is one of the reasons we started this- blogging is not a one sided thing.

3. When you are stuck for post ideas what do you do?
When I have absolutely no idea what to post- which happens often considering my mind is normally full of ideas- I look at pictures on Pinterest, or some websites with post ideas. Often thinking about something else can make a great idea pop into my head.

So there are 3 blogging questions that will let you know a bit more about the way I work around this blog. If you have any more questions, or would like some helping setting up your own blog leave a comment below or use our contact form.

Inspiration for any day

Hey there, it's Poppy.
1am the kind of person who loves looking at quotes. I love being inspired and when I am having a bad day I can spend ages looking at quotes on Pinterest. Believe it or not, it makes me feel better! So I thought that today I might share my 5 favourite quotes. These can be found on our Pinterest, or the direct pin can be found by clicking the links.

1. Life is like a camera, you focus on what is important, capture the good times, develop from the negatives and if things don't work out take another shot. I love this quote, and I think that I shared it in an earlier post. I think that it is a perfect metaphor and gives me the courage to have another go when things don't work out (like our first blog).

2. I may not be there yet but I am closer than I was yesterday. One step can make all the difference. This is another one of my favourite quotes. I find it hard sometimes to start something that I know will be difficult and take lots of time and effort but reading this reminds me that the first step is the most important and starting will mean that I am closer to finishing that I was before.

3. Great things are done by a series of small things brought together- vincent van gogh. I think that this quote is a reminder that everything you do doesn't have to be big and take a lot of time, lots of small things work just as well as one big one. Kind of like cleaning your room- little bits each day make it much easier.

4. Quiet people have the loudest minds- stephen king. This might not be inspirational for some people but it reminds me that it is ok to be quiet and not shout out every thought that comes to my mind. Just because I don't share all my ideas doesn't mean that they aren't as good as those who share them all. This one has a similar message

5.I'm not beautiful like you, I'm beautiful like me. I read this to remind myself that everyone is different and that's ok. Don't try too hard to fit in, you were born to stand out. This also reminds me that it is ok to be different and that pretending to be someone else just to make my friends happy is no good to anyone.

So there are my 5 (or 7) favourite inspirational quotes that are perfect for any day. Which is your favourite? Did I miss one?
Let me know below...
p.s I can't wait to share my post with you tomorrow!
